The only comment I would add to Jennifer’s review is, if possible, it’s better to give the Petromalt to a cat on an empty stomach and not with food as it may inhibit the absorption of some of the nutrients in its food. My cats love to lick a one-inch strip of the Petromalt right off my finger as an evening treat several hours away from feeding time. One 14-year-old cat needs it daily to help prevent constipation, and the other one only needs it once a week to prevent vomiting up hair balls.

I bought this for my cats because they love eating grass and have avoided hairball remedies in the past, even when I mixed it in their food (they just refused to eat the food then).

I’m an ingredient-conscious person when it comes to what I feed my cats. I try to give them high quality foods with no fillers or poor ingredients, and have been happy to see what a difference a high quality diet makes to their fur and energy levels. I forgot to look at the ingredients for this prior to my purchase but looked it over after I received it. The first few ingredients weren’t so bad, and then I got to an ingredient listed as “animal digest.”

Here’s the Wikipedia definition for animal digest:

“Animal Digest is a common ingredient used in pet foods. It is material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed.[1]

As defined by the AAFCO, it is produced by chemically or enzymatically treating animal tissue (such as flesh, bone, organs, etc.) from slaughterhouses and other sources, in a process akin to rendering.

Yet another expert defines this as “a cooked-down broth” which can be made from unspecified parts of unspecified animals. The animals used can be obtained from almost any source and no control is in place over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: “4-D animals” (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, euthanized at animal shelters, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on.”[2]”

Yummy stuff. Basically, pet food companies toss ingredients like this into pet food since they can’t legally put it in human food. Anyway, I figure it won’t be too difficult for me to just grind up grass of my own and mix it with some petroleum jelly when my cats have hairballs. That should be cheaper, too.

Cat wouldn’t go near, much less taste, this hairball remedy; but she rejected three other similar pastes, so the problem may be with the cat, not the product. The good news is that she loves the Friskies Cat Food Crunchy Hairball Remedy Withtuna, 2.1-Ounce Pouch (Pack of 10), and it seems to have solved a problem that’s been going on for 18 months.

I have 2 cats (ages 6 and 4) & have tried every hairball remedy on the market. This is the ONLY one they LOVE & will eat willingly even if I just put it in their dishes. It’s also the only hairball remedy I have found to be as close to “natural” as possible. My only wish is that it would come in a larger size to accommodate the multi-cat household.

When I remember to give this to my cats they love it and it works pretty well. One of our cats throws up about 3 times per week (according to my vet that’s not abnormal for some cats who groom alot) and this has helped tremendously.

We have 3 cats that use this product. After trying a couple of different brands that they wouldnt eat at all (some liquids, some paste), when we tried this they all loved it right away. They will eat from your finger as recommended (or even right from the tube as I am squeezing it!), usually I mix it with their morning wet canned food and they eat it up.

As far as effectiveness it is also the best I have seen. All 3 rarely get hairballs now (2 are longhaired Maine Coons), sometimes only once every few months. Without the paste they would get them usually every week, and the hairballs would be GIANT, about 3/4 the size of a hotdog!

It short this product works great, and all our picky cats love it. I highly recommend it, especially for longhaired cats.

My two adult cats LOVE 8 in 1 Kittymalt. They lick it off my finger and to them it is just a treat. In fact, the pet stores near me no longer carry 8 in 1 Kittymalt and I found out the hard way that cats will not eat any other hairball remedy willingly. I have been looking for Kittymalt for at least 6 months and was very excited when I found it on Amazon. My cats are happy again and even my kitten licked the Kittymalt off my finger when he saw how much the big kitties love it. It is a big help for the hairballs and sensitive tummy that my long haired cat gets. I did notice that the new tube of Kittymalt now includes a picture of a different cat and has the word Excel at the top of it. I think Exel might be 8 in 1′s parent company now. Either way the cats still love it!

We have used this product for several years as part of the plan that has evolved to deal with our Ragdoll cat’s chronic, serious constipation problem.

We give him about 10cc of this every other day, along with 5mg Cisapride and 3mL Lactulose 10gm every day. A syringe must be used, since there is no way that he will eat any of this on his own (contrary to what the packaging says).

Veterinarians give you a blank stare when you mention Kittymalt, but for sure the Cisapride and Lactulose alone are NOT enough to deal with this problem, even though the vets seem to think that they ought to be.

I’ve got two long hair cats who absolutely require a hairball remedy. I had tried the 8-in-1 years ago and have used both flavors (seafood and malt) with great results.

I used to get this at Petsmart, but they stopped carrying this particular brand in my area. I’ve tried the substitutes (Petromalt, generics), but my kitties will not eat any of them.

I’m buying this brand online now through Amazon. I buy enough to get free shipping, and it’s the same price or better than Petsmart.

If your cat needs a hairball remedy paste, definitely go for this brand. I’ve had at least five cats use this brand over the years, and they all will eat it enthusiastically. That’s saying a lot for my finicky cats.

The item I received was not the one pictured. My 2 cats loved the one pictured (bright turquoise box), but evidently the box changed & so did the formula. My cats do not like the new formula & will not eat it, so I was very disappointed since they had been very excited about Kittymalt for the last 7 years.

This product is pretty much the same as other “felaxin” type products as far as one who is unwilling to actually TASTE it can tell. However, for a product like this for me, its all about the packaging. It’s a good solid paste, easy to squeeze and the cat likes it well enough to eat it from my hands. The last 2 similar products I tried got runny after a few doses and made a general mess in the drawer where it is kept. ESPECIALLY, DO NOT buy the kind in the aluminum tube as the tube splits in different places and leaks out after you’ve squeezed a dose or two from it. This is a sturdy plastic tube that lasts throughout the life of the product and again, the cat happily licks it up!!! (PS – also, she DOES NOT THROW UP any more since I started using it and that’s the BEST OF ALL)

As this is common item cat owners buy, the quality is as expected. This site does have the best pricing now that it is in the 4 for 3 sale. Since I have 4 cats I use a lot of this per month and they all like this brand.
